Mike Love himself suggests some lyrics for the opening song of The Beatles “White Album”. A good-natured mockery of the surf rock of his Beach Boys from “California Girls”, but also of the rock and roll of Chuck Berry from “Back in the USA”…
Paul McCartney concepisce Back in the USSR come parodia (e allo stesso tempo tributo) al rock'n'roll di Chuck Berry e Beach Boys. Il brano è talmente convincente da diventare uno standard del genere stesso. Lo stesso Mike Love dei Beach Boys, che in quel periodo si trova insieme ai Beatles in India, suggerisce di inserire nel bridge dei riferimenti alle ragazze russe. Proprio come i Beach Boys in California Girls.
Le registrazioni di Back in the USSR (e di Dear Prudence, il brano successivo nel White Album), capitano però durante un periodo di tensioni che vedono il momentaneo abbandono di Ringo Starr. È principalmente McCartney, infatti, a sostituire il batterista mentre è in Sardegna ospite di Peter Sellers. Quando ritorna, Ringo ritrova la sua batteria ricoperta di fiori e con scritto “Bentornato Ringo”, in segno di gratitudine e sollievo da parte di tutti.
Nonostante tutto, i pochi ma mai banali accordi, gli effetti sonori degli aerei, il semplice ma efficace assolo di George Harrison, i continui riferimenti del testo a ragazze georgiane e moscovite con Georgia On My Mind, e ancora Back in the USA di Chuck Berry, i cori alla Beach Boys, le balalaike e molto altro, contribuiscono a creare quell'atmosfera di ironia e felicità degna del più spensierato quartetto di Liverpool.
